Iceberg Cyber Security run and row 200k!

Over December 2022 and January 2023 the Iceberg team plan to run and row 200 kilometers to raise money to help in the support of victims of cybercrime & online harm

Iceberg Cyber Security is a recruitment consultancy focussing solely on Cybersecurity and Forensic technology placements, and they are passionate about finding their clients the very best talent to protect their businesses. They aim is to raise £2,000 which will cover the cost of The Cyber Helpline supporting hundreds of victims.

Every year in the UK millions of victims are left to fend for themselves against tech-savvy cyber criminals. For many the financial and emotional impact can be huge - from lost pensions to suicide attempts. This needs to change.

As a provider of information security services, Iceberg has a close connection with cybercrime and the team are keen to do all they can to help victims in the UK.

The Cyber Helpline is a charity that enables the UK cybersecurity community to provide direct victim support to individuals targeted by cybercrime and cyber bullying. Coronavirus restrictions have driven more and more of people’s lives online. As a result, cybercrime has increased rapidly, and people are desperate for help. We are dealing with a large increase in online scams, hacked accounts, harassment, and cyberstalking.

By supporting the Iceberg team you will ensure that more victims of cybercrime will be able to access the help they desperately need.

The Cyber Helpline: Why do we exist?

Not enough is being done to support victims of cyber-crime in the UK. From the National Cyber Security Strategy to local law enforcement, individuals are being let down and left to fend for themselves against skilled cyber criminals. The impact for the millions of victims is huge – financially, psychologically and physically. We imagine a UK where cyber-criminals don’t win and everyone has access to free, expert cyber security help if they need it.

We believe that that every individual in the UK should have:

  • Immediate support when they realise – or suspect – that they may have a malicious online security issue.

  • The ability to anonymously access expert cyber security help.

  • Free access to expert help from a cyber security expert who can provide advice and guidance on containment, recovery and future prevention.

  • The ability to speak to someone in plain English. Someone who can talk in their language – not confuse them with IT jargon.

  • A fit for purpose law enforcement infrastructure that includes simple reporting, actioned cases, swift results and cyber criminals who are brought to justice.

  • Technology providers who provide them with safe solutions and help support the misuse of technology.

  • A National Cyber Security Strategy that puts individuals first.

Our impact & achievements

Since we took our first case in May 2018, and then formally launched with the release of our chatbot in November 2018, we have achieved a lot.

We launched the world’s first cyber security helpline for individuals providing 24/7 help and 100% run by volunteers. This is a service by the information security community for the general public. In its first four years the service has helped over 26,000 victims, and is currently supporting circa 2,000 victims a month. Our caseload grew 360% over the last 12 months.

We launched the world’s first chatbot that can diagnose cyber security attacks based on plain English descriptions of symptoms described by the victim. Our chatbot has processed over 26,000 cases (as well as hundreds of test cases) and is running with an 75% diagnosis accuracy. This means that victims can get immediate support 24/7, are likely to get access to the right help and remain anonymous.

We have recruited a large team of expert volunteers to support our service and built an online course and testing system to prepare them for providing frontline services. 91% of our services users scored satisfaction with the service either 9 or 10 out of 10.
