Beware of Recruitment Scams: Protect Yourself from Job Fraud

Recruitment scams—also known as job fraud—are a rising form of cybercrime that targets jobseekers with fake employment opportunities designed to steal personal information or money. Scammers often impersonate legitimate employers or recruitment agents, tricking victims into sharing sensitive data, paying unnecessary fees, or completing unpaid tasks under the pretense of a real hiring process.

How Recruitment Scams Operate

These scams often start with unsolicited messages through email, WhatsApp, or job platforms. Victims may be asked to pay for background checks, training materials, or "job kits." In more deceptive cases, individuals are encouraged to deposit money into digital wallets with the promise of future earnings—only to lose access to those funds entirely.

Who’s at Risk?

Young jobseekers and recent graduates are especially vulnerable, as they may be unfamiliar with standard hiring procedures. Our data shows that the average victim loses around £4,000 to recruitment scams. Alarmingly, cases have surged by 290% in recent months, making job fraud the third most commonly reported scam to the organisation.

How to Stay Safe

  • Research Recruiters and Companies: Always verify the identity of the recruiter and the legitimacy of the company. Genuine employers do not request money upfront.

  • Be Wary of Upfront Fees: Any request for payment—whether for training, equipment, or background checks—is a major red flag.

  • Protect Your Personal Information: Do not share sensitive details like your National Insurance number or bank account information until you are certain the job offer is legitimate.

  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you believe you've been targeted, report it immediately to Action Fraud, your bank, and the platform where the interaction occurred.

If you’ve been affected by a recruitment scam, you can get help.
