Fraud Subject-Matter Expert (Volunteer — Advice Team)

Type: Volunteer

Hours: approx. 4 hours per week

Reporting line: Advice Team Lead

Location: This is a remote working role, for UK applicants

The Cyber Helpline

The Cyber Helpline is dedicated to supporting victims of cybercrime, online harm and digital fraud by providing clear, practical advice that empowers them to take action, minimise harm and move forward. With fraud and scams on the rise, the need for high-quality, accessible advice has never been greater. According to recent industry data, the UK saw over 3.3 million cases of fraud in 2024 and losses of £1.17 billion.

Role Summary

We are seeking a volunteer with strong expertise in fraud (especially cyber-enabled fraud) to join our Advice Team. Your primary focus will not be on working with victims directly, but on shaping and creating the advice content that our frontline team uses. With your background, you will help ensure our guidance is authoritative, up-to-date and crafted in a way that non-experts (victims and those helping them) can understand and act on.

Key Responsibilities

What You Will Be Doing

  • Advising on, drafting and refining advice content (articles, guides, FAQs) around fraud and scam issues — especially where cyber or digital methods are involved.

  • Working with our Advice Team to identify knowledge gaps and develop content to address them.

  • Ensuring our advice reflects current threats, fraud-models and mitigation techniques (including telephone scams, authorised push payments, card/mobile fraud, identity theft, phishing etc.).

  • Reviewing existing advice material and suggesting improvements or updates from a fraud-SME perspective.

  • Collaborating with content writers / editors to ensure accuracy, clarity and practical relevance.

  • Occasionally supporting the team with expert insight when a topic or trend around fraud emerges.

Person Specification

Who You Are

  • You bring solid experience in fraud investigations, fraud prevention, cyber-enabled fraud, financial crime or a related field.

  • You have a strong understanding of digital fraud vectors (e.g. online scams, crypto fraud, impersonation).

  • You enjoy writing / content development: you are comfortable crafting or refining advice/information content (clear, concise, user-friendly).

  • You can translate specialist knowledge into plain-English guidance for non-experts.

  • You are comfortable working on a volunteer basis, with flexibility and self-motivation.

  • You have excellent attention to detail, think critically about risk and control, and keep abreast of emerging fraud trends.

What we offer

  • Contributing to a high-impact cause: helping to shape how victims of fraud receive advice and support.

  • Working collaboratively with a dynamic team of cyber and fraud professionals.

  • Enhancing your profile as a subject-matter expert in fraud and cybercrime advice.

  • Flexibility: we ask for approx. 4 hours per week, and remote working makes it compatible with other commitments.
